Welcome to the MedEvidence Monday Minute Radio Show hosted by Kevin Geddings of WSOS St. Augustine Radio and powered ENCORE Research Group. Each Monday morning, Dr. Michael Koren calls in to bring you the latest medical updates with insightful discussions. Medevidence is where we help you navigate the real truth behind medical research, with both a clinical and research perspective. So sit back, relax and get ready to learn about the truth behind the data in medicine and healthcare. This is MedEvidence!
Kevin Geddings: 0:30
Dr. Koren is here with us. He, of course, is a medical doctor, cardiologist, research scientist and a part of our family here at WSOS and we appreciate him and, of course, he brings us some great information. You've got a lot going on, right, Dr. Koren?
Dr. Michael Koren: 0:44
Yeah, we're doing a lot of educational events this week. We did a lot of educational events last week and it's actually one of the things, Kevin, that we supply to the community that I feel actually proudest of. We do a lot of things for our community members, but helping people really understand different medical conditions and what the possible options are are probably the thing that I enjoy most and I certainly get a lot of professional satisfaction out of that. This past week, Dr. Kristen Stewart really gave a world-class lecture our offices in Jacksonville on something called hidradenitis suppurativa or HS, and this is what people call inverse acne.
Dr. Michael Koren: 1:33
So it's kind of a form of acne that's worse than standard acne and you get these little acne form lumps. But sometimes people call it inverse acne because it actually goes sort of inside the skin rather than just outside the skin and cause these bumps and boils that can be painful and disfiguring. So she really just gave a state-of-the-art lecture. I attended the lecture, I learned a tremendous amount and we are running some studies to help people that may have this condition. So again, hidradenitis suppurativa or HS. By the way, kevin, one of the good things about going to medical school is you learn to pronounce these fancy words and then come up with acronyms so you don't have to say them publicly like HS.
Kevin Geddings: 2:08
There you go.
Dr. Michael Koren: 2:10
That's all you need to say. But, more broadly, our organization does work in many different medical areas, including dermatology. So, as we speak, we're running this HS study and we're also running studies in more standard acne, including acne vaccine studies that are super interesting. So we have a number of physicians from different specialties that work in our group and these are really world-class people that provide world-class information.
Kevin Geddings: 2:35
Yeah Well, so many different ways too, you know, as a regular person out there can participate in some of this research, some of these issues that we're talking about. If you're dealing with a particular chronic health condition, I encourage you to reach out once again to ENCORE Research Group, where you can, you know, find out ways that you can participate in leading-edge medical research. Go to EncoreDocs. com. That's EncoreDocs. com. You've got an event coming up this Friday too. We're going to be talking about some obesity issues, right?
Dr. Michael Koren: 3:02
Yeah, yeah. So my colleague, Miciah Jones, who's a cardiologist in St. Augustine a tremendous speaker. I just love doing programs with him. He's so articulate and just gets his point across so well. We're going to talk about the protean manifestations of obesity, and if you don't know what the word protean means, then I would advise you to come to the lecture and you'll learn all about that, which is super interesting.
Dr. Michael Koren: 3:27
He's also a cardiologist, so you'd have to imagine that obesity has some implications in cardiology and we'd encourage everybody to learn more about this. And again, it's another example of community outreach where people who have multiple medical problems, perhaps with obesity, can learn what solutions are out there.
Kevin Geddings: 3:47
Yeah, Once again this is a free lunch and learn. It's being done at WJCT, the public radio station up in Jacksonville, right across the street from where the Jaguars play football.
Kevin Geddings: 3:55
And you can register by just going to wjct. org. Wjct. org, click on the events tab. It's right there and you can easily sign up. So it's super easy. I encourage you to attend. I've been to one of these. It was a lot of fun. You learn a lot, you're in and out, parking is super easy. I know that's an issue for some of our listeners and, to be honest, in the middle of the day it's pretty easy to get up to Jacksonville for these kind of events. Dr. Koren, any other thoughts?
Dr. Michael Koren: 4:22
Well, you usually bring up MedEvidence at this point. I always appreciate that and that's been also very gratifying.
Dr. Michael Koren: 4:29
Our viewership and listenership is growing rapidly in MedEvidence and the feedback I'm getting is that it really provides medical information in a way that's different from anything else out there and having knowledgeable physicians talk about an issue conversationally and then being able to eavesdrop on them is a really super effective way to understand really what's going on in the medical area. That's free of commercial bias and really gets to the heart of the issue about what decisions can I make for me and my family to maximize our way of dealing with whatever the medical issue might be. So we'd encourage people to check out MedEvidence.
Kevin Geddings: 5:11
Yeah, no, absolutely. I know a lot of you will go to the Internet looking for information about a particular health situation, health condition, a diagnosis that either you or a loved one have received truth behind the data and they provide information for you on all sorts of great different platforms that are just super easy to use and, of course, you can trust. You know you're going to trust whatever you see on medevidence. com. Dr. Koren, we appreciate your time this morning. Thank you.
Dr. Michael Koren: 5:46
It's always a pleasure.
Dr. Michael Koren: 5:46
Kevin, have a great week.
Kevin Geddings: 5:47
All right, you too.
